Annual Report-2012

Annual Report (20 Oct 2011 - 3 Nov 2012)
Thanks to God the almighty for creating this idea of Coastal Brains in my mind while I was in Maldives as a high school Biology teacher. I have got inspiration and motivation to start this social project from Mr. Stephen Fullom (England) who educated me, from my high school to my Master Degree. So I could get a better job abroad and help my family. (please read the project description page)

I shared my views with Mr. Jerry, a Spoken English teacher, who had been doing Bachelor of Education course with me. And he agreed to train the kids Spoken English.

20 Oct 2011- We conducted a preliminary test in two Government schools for children of 5th standard (Age 10 yrs) to find out the brilliant ones. 33 kids took the test and 11 kids were above the level set (75%).

22 Oct 2011- We visited the houses of the 11 kids to see their family conditions. Kids living in houses with poor basic facilities and more girl children in the family were given preference and thus we selected our first batch of 6 kids: 2 girls and 4 boys.

1-11-2011- We started our classes in an old house. The kids used to sit on the floor.
3-12-2011-Took the kids to visit a fishing harbour and a marine aquarium.
26-1-2012- Took the kids for a medical exhibition in Trivandrum Medical college.
We take the kids for outing on every 4th Sunday of the month.

February 2012- We started to give the kids an exposure to English speaking people, the foreigners who come as tourists. We take the kids on alternative days to the beach for an hour to arrange this practical session. Some of the tourists sympathised with the kids and appreciated our initiative and offered financial supports. So we have got chairs with writing support, 6 bicycles for the kids to go to their regular school, books, pens, etc.

April 2012- During the summer vacation 3 kids were sent to Sivananda Ashram for doing a Yoga course and the other 3 kids attended a summer camp in Travancore cultural centre. Meantime, we conducted a basic literacy programme for the other children of the village. Mrs.Beena was appointed as a teacher.

May 2012- We conducted the standard maintenance test for the 6 kids. The performance of one boy was unsatisfactory and the child was excluded from the project.

June 2012 - We conducted the Preliminary test for finding new brilliant kids. We selected 7 kids this time: 3 boys and 4 girls.
Mrs.Beena was replaced by Ms.Nisha, a Graduate.

The three kids who did the yoga course have been training the other 9 kids.

23-July- 2012- We inaugurated our new classroom building by our parish priest.

We accommodate 4 boys in the old house.

27-Aug-2012- Coastal Brains conducted a survey in the village to know the population and the families without a toilet.

20-Sep-2012- Coastal Brains cleaned a public place spoiled by papers and plastics.
20-Oct-2012- We got a white board and notice board in our new class room.
3-Nov-2012-  We celebrated our first anniversary.
